Occupational Health and Safety Requirements for the Workplace

The easing of South Africa’s lockdown regulations will see many businesses opening their doors and employees returning to work. Every employer that is permitted to operate during the lockdown period will need to adhere to the sector-specific guidelines that apply to their business in addition to the measures set out in the Directive and the Regulations published by the South African Government and appointed institutions.

The rules and regulations vary according to industry sectors and company sizes meaning that the same measures don’t necessarily apply to every company. According to feedback from companies that are already operating, determining which regulations and measurements to apply is an administrative and time-consuming task.  All companies are required to establish and implement a workplace plan prior to the re-opening of the company and the complexity of the plan will, to a large extent, be determined by the outcomes of the risk assessments conducted by each workplace.
