In mid-April 2022, South African power utility Eskom issued tenders for the lease of land for renewable energy projects in the province Mpumalanga. The plans were initially announced in December 2021.
Each project may be up to 100 MW in size and the leases will apply for a minimum of 20 years. It is estimated that the program could add up to 4 GW to the grid over the next few years.
The land is located close to existing power stations and transmission lines in Mpumalanga. This provides developers with a connection to the grid.
The initiative demonstrated Eskom’s commitment to the just energy transition. Eskom Chief Executive André De Ruyter explained that the initiative was a “trial” that could be extended in the future.
The goal of this initiative is to support investment in renewable energies while providing relief to South Africa’s constrained electricity grid. With this initiative, investors are given accelerated access to the existing grid.
Potential bidders can submit their bids until April 29 at 10:00 am. The tender documents are available free of charge on Eskom’s website.
